Having a Bad Air Day
I woke up this morning, did a casual scroll through my Watch Duty App before coffee — a habit I picked up somewhere in the last few fire seasons, the way some people check the stock market — and there it was. Fires scattered across the western map like someone had taken a red pen and gotten a little too enthusiastic. I looked through my skylight outside. The Sangres, which are usually crisp enough to count individual trees on a clear morning, looked like they'd been shot through a dirty camera lens. That flat, bruised, low-contrast look the light gets. My eyes were doing the thing where they feel slightly sandy, like I'd been at the beach without ever leaving my kitchen.
Bad air day in Santa Fe. The Frijoles Fire is about 20 miles Northeast of us, 6000 acres and counting, but the winds have us sucking in not a small amount of particulates. In California leading up to the pandemic, we talked AQI like bosses, so I guessed the Air Quality Index with in 10 points just by measuring the haze from bed.
I wanted to know how bad "bad" actually is this year, so I went and looked. As of a few days ago, the country had already burned through more than 5 million acres — with the year-to-date pace running well above the ten-year average, and the National Interagency Fire Center sitting at Preparedness Level 5, which is the highest rung on their ladder, meaning: everybody's resources are already spoken for. Oregon alone broke its own all-time record this season, and it's got another two months of fire weather left to go. The Pacific Northwest passed 2 million acres burned before it even hit its usual August peak.
So no, I wasn't imagining it. Millions of acres is not a rhetorical flourish. It's just the count.
It's Not Just a Western Thing Anymore
Here's the part that I think a lot of us — especially those of us who've spent decades associating wildfire smoke with a particular kind of Western, high-desert, late-summer experience — are still getting used to: this stuff travels. A month or so ago, in mid-July, Canada was having a historically rough fire season of its own, mostly out of Ontario and the Prairie provinces, and the smoke didn't stay put. It rode the jet stream south and settled down over the Great Lakes and the entire Northeast corridor like a lid coming down on a pot.
We're talking Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Boston, New York, Washington, D.C. — cities that don't think of themselves as fire country at all, suddenly under the same kind of hazy orange skies we've come to expect out here. On July 17th, the daily average fine-particle pollution in the Baltimore-Washington area came close to 200 micrograms per cubic meter, which triggered a "Code Purple" alert — the air-quality equivalent of a five-alarm fire, except the alarm is your lungs. More than 120 million people across the Midwest and Northeast were living under air quality warnings at the peak of it. Some of them had never checked an AQI number in their life before that week. Now a lot of them probably have an app for it, the same way I've got Watch Duty.
What's happening, in plain terms, is that the whole idea of "your local air" is becoming less local. A fire in Ontario is now, in a very real sense, a New York City problem. A fire in Arizona is a Santa Fe problem. We're all sharing an atmosphere that is increasingly on fire somewhere, and increasingly good at moving that fact around.
What the Smoke Actually Does to an Aging Body
This is where I want to slow down, because I think there's a real story here — not just a weather story, but a story about what it means to grow older on a planet that keeps finding new ways to test the body's margins.
Wildfire smoke is mostly made up of PM2.5 — particulate matter so fine it's measured in millionths of a meter, small enough to slip past your nose hairs, past your throat's defenses, straight down into the deepest branches of your lungs and, from there, into your bloodstream. Turns out — and this surprised me, honestly — wildfire smoke seems to hit the body harder than regular urban pollution of the same concentration. Some research out of Southern California found the respiratory impact of wildfire-specific PM2.5 was noticeably worse than PM2.5 from other, more ordinary sources like traffic exhaust.
And the people who feel it first and worst are, predictably, the people already living closer to the edge — including a lot of us in the Elderware demographic. A huge Yale study, using Medicare records for 65 million Americans over 65, found that cumulative exposure to wildfire smoke over time raised the risk of being hospitalized for cardiovascular disease. Not just on the smokiest single day — over the arc of a smoky season, added up. Another large study of older adults found that after a wildfire smoke event, physician visits for congestive heart failure rose by about 11%, and visits for ischemic heart disease rose by about 19%. There's data suggesting a roughly 9% increase in COPD-related mortality among elderly people for every additional microgram of smoke particulate in the air, sustained over time. Even the risk of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest ticks up on heavy smoke days.
None of that is meant to alarm anybody into hiding in a sealed room for the rest of the fire season. But I think it's worth sitting with for a second, because it reframes what a "bad air day" actually is. It's not just an inconvenience, a hazy view, a scratchy throat. For an aging heart or an aging set of lungs, it's a measurable stressor, the kind that shows up later as a hospital admission or an ER visit, especially if it keeps happening summer after summer. Which, at this point, it does.
What to Actually Do About It — Beyond Doomscrolling
I don't think the answer is despair, and I don't think it's pretending this isn't happening either. A few practical things, gathered from the folks who study this for a living and from our own New Mexico Environment Department, who've been dealing with this exact scenario for years now:
Check your air before you plan your day, the same way you'd check the weather. AirNow.gov's Fire and Smoke map is a good one, and it's free.
If you've got a swamp cooler — and a lot of us in Santa Fe do — know that its filters are not built to catch smoke particulate. If it smells smoky and your cooler's running, that's your cue to shut it off rather than keep pulling outside air through it. Same goes for your car — switch to recirculated air rather than fresh air intake on a smoky day.
A decent HVAC filter, MERV 13 if your system can handle it, makes a real difference indoors. So does a portable air purifier in whatever room you spend the most time in — often the bedroom, since that's where you're breathing for eight hours straight.
And on the genuinely bad days, the ones that turn the mountains into a smudge, it really is fine — smart, even — to just stay in. Skip the walk. Move the garden work to a better morning. This isn't about becoming fearful of the outside world. It's about picking your days the way you'd pick them around a heat wave or an ice storm — because that's essentially what this has become: another kind of weather, one that didn't used to be part of the seasonal rhythm and now is.
The Bigger Story
What strikes me, writing this on a hazy Santa Fe morning, is how much this fits the larger pattern Elderware keeps circling back to: aging well now means adjusting to a world that keeps changing the terms. We used to think about aging in terms of what our own bodies were doing — the joints, the teeth, the memory, the stamina. Increasingly, we also have to think about what the world around us is doing to those same bodies, from three states or three provinces away.
That's not a comfortable thought, but there's something almost clarifying in it too. The old wisdom about paying attention, about not pushing through when your body's telling you to rest, about building routines that protect rather than deplete — all of that turns out to apply just as well to a smoky sky as it does to anything else. Check the air. Take it seriously. And then get on with your day as best you can, indoors if you have to, and go find something worth doing while you wait for the wind to shift.
It always does, eventually. In the meantime, I'll be here, watching the mountains slowly come back into focus.
